What began with a stolen helmet and a long walk home has grown into one of Nepal’s most remarkable startup success stories. Helmets Nepal didn’t just address a market need—it created an entirely new market. In a country where motorcycle safety was often overlooked, the brand sparked a cultural shift, transforming the simple act of wearing a helmet into a symbol of style, responsibility, and awareness.
From its early days as an emergency helmet delivery service, Helmets Nepal has evolved into East Asia’s largest automotive after-sales lifestyle brand. Today, it’s not just a retailer but a pioneer actively shaping the motorcycle culture in Nepal with certified products, exclusive international partnerships, and a bold vision for the future.
Starting from humble beginnings, Helmets Nepal now operates eight outlets across the country—including two flagship stores in Naxal and Maitighar, five express showrooms throughout Kathmandu, and a collaborative Yamaha showroom in Bhairahawa. What truly sets the brand apart is its relentless commitment to quality and rider safety, alongside its rapid growth.
Their extensive product lineup features top global helmet brands such as Shark, Bilmola, Axxis, Fox, LS2, MT, KYT, SMK, and Axor, paired with riding gears from Motowolf, Kavach, Loneranger, and others. Beyond helmets, they offer exclusive moto gear, tyres from Apollo, Maxxis, and Michelin, as well as comprehensive bike and helmet servicing.
Holding exclusive distribution rights for international names like Shark, Fox, Axxis, Bilmola, and Ignite, Helmets Nepal has solidified its position as the premier destination for premium riding gear in Nepal. Crucially, most helmets in their collection are ISI, ECE, or DOT certified—guaranteeing riders gear that meets stringent international safety standards without sacrificing style or comfort.
In this candid conversation, we delve into the inspiring journey of Helmets Nepal with Sajal Joshi, Managing Director —exploring its challenges, growth, impact, and what the road ahead holds.
Looking back over the past decade, what inspired the creation of Helmets Nepal, and how has the brand evolved since its inception?
Helmets Nepal was born out of a personal experience. When I was 19, my helmet was stolen one night in Thamel while I was out with friends. I had no choice but to walk home just to get another helmet so I could retrieve my bike. That night, the idea for a helmet delivery service came to mind.
Later, a tragic bike accident involving two juniors who weren’t wearing safety gear deeply impacted us. It made us realize the need wasn’t just for convenience, but for awareness and access to safety. We began with emergency helmet deliveries and slowly expanded to include certified helmets, riding gear, tyres, and servicing. What started as a startup is now Nepal’s—and even East Asia’s—largest after-sales motorcycle lifestyle brand.
What were the biggest challenges you faced in the early stages, especially when e-commerce and bike gear retail were still evolving in Nepal?
Starting a business while managing college studies was incredibly tough. I had to sacrifice time with family, friends, and academics to stay committed to the vision. Developing a user-friendly website was difficult, given Nepal's limited exposure to e-commerce at the time. Operating in such a niche market created uncertainty, and COVID-19 only amplified these challenges. Keeping morale high and operations running during the pandemic was another major hurdle. Still, we pushed through, and today we’ve expanded to multiple outlets across Nepal.
With more brands and competition entering the market, what makes Helmets Nepal stand out today?
Our strength lies in having a clear, long-term vision: to be Nepal’s largest automotive after-sales retail chain. While we began with helmets, we’ve grown into a full-fledged platform offering everything from riding gear and accessories to servicing.
We’ve also helped raise awareness about motorcycle safety, transforming what used to be a side hustle or survival business into a respected career path for many Nepali youths. We embrace competition—it motivates us to innovate and evolve. In doing so, we’ve helped redefine Nepal’s motorcycle accessories market.
How has customer behavior and the motorcycling culture in Nepal changed over the last 10 years, and how has Helmets Nepal adapted?
Before Helmets Nepal, most helmets sold were low-cost Chinese options, and customer decisions were driven mainly by price. We introduced a range of certified, stylish, and safety-focused helmets, which gradually shifted consumer preferences.
Today, the market has grown substantially. Annual helmet imports have jumped from NPR 70–80 crores to over NPR 150 crores. The premium helmet segment alone has grown from NPR 3 crores to more than NPR 10–15 crores. Locally manufactured helmets now account for NPR 50–60 crores. These shifts show how we’ve helped change the conversation—from cheap protection to quality, safety, and expression.
Tell us about Helmets Nepal’s current operations and partnerships. What products and services do you now offer?
We currently have eight outlets across Nepal—two flagship stores in Naxal and Maitighar, five express showrooms in Kathmandu, and one in Bhairahawa in collaboration with Yamaha.
We offer a wide selection of international helmet brands like Shark, Bilmola, Axxis, Fox, LS2, MT, KYT, SMK, and Axor. Our riding gear range includes top names like Motowolf, Kavach, and Loneranger. We’re also the exclusive distributor for Shark, Fox, Axxis, Bilmola, and Ignite Helmets in Nepal.
In addition, we sell high-quality tyres (Apollo, Maxxis, Michelin), provide helmet and bike servicing, and are constantly expanding our product lines to cover the full motorcycle lifestyle experience.
What does the future hold for Helmets Nepal? Are there any upcoming services, product expansions, or strategic plans?
We’re entering a new phase of growth. A major step is our ongoing partnership with MAW Automotive, which is helping us expand into six Yamaha showrooms across Nepal. This aligns with our mission of transitioning from an emergency delivery brand to a complete road safety and lifestyle provider.
We’re also working on experience-driven showrooms that go beyond sales—spaces that build community and encourage safe riding habits. The road ahead includes new partnerships, more retail outlets, and a stronger focus on the motorcycling lifestyle that continues to evolve in Nepal.
